PSHE Curriculum Intent, Implementation, and Impact Statement
Intent
At Hawkesley Church Primary Academy, our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum is designed to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Central to our PSHE approach is the Jigsaw PSHE programme, a comprehensive and evidence-based curriculum that supports the personal, social, health, and emotional development of children aged 3 to 16. We also deliver the My Happy Minds programme, a NHS supported mental health scheme for primary schools. We aim to foster emotional resilience, self-awareness, and essential life skills, preparing our pupils for success in school and beyond.
Our PSHE curriculum is informed by the following key principles:
- Holistic Development: We recognise that learning occurs in a safe and supportive environment that nurtures the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of every child.
- Inclusivity: Our lessons reflect the diversity of our HEcommunity, addressing issues such as equality, respect, and British values.
- Preparedness for the Future: We ensure our pupils are equipped to manage relationships, make informed decisions, and understand their rights and responsibilities.
- Application of Learning: Through the integration of social-emotional learning (SEL), we ensure children not only learn important topics but also understand how to apply them in real-life situations.
- Parental Engagement: We actively involve parents in their children’s PSHE education, fostering an understanding of its importance and encouraging parental support in a home learning environment.
Implementation
At Hawkesley, the PSHE curriculum is meticulously planned and delivered using the Jigsaw PSHE programme. Our implementation strategy includes:
- Curriculum Planning: The Jigsaw curriculum is mapped across all year groups, providing a spiral structure that builds skills year by year and adapts to each child’s needs. Lessons are tailored to meet developmental requirements and evolving societal contexts.
- Skilled Delivery: Our teachers are trained in Jigsaw and My Happy Mind methodology and effective PSHE pedagogy, utilising various teaching methods, including mindfulness practices, happy breathing, calming strategies group discussions, and reflective activities. This promotes engagement and encourages pupils to express their thoughts and feelings openly.
- Cross-Curricular Links: We integrate Jigsaw PSHE with other subjects, allowing pupils to see the relevance of PSHE in their wider learning context and daily lives. Our school values are woven into everything we do at Hawkesley and children are reminded of these throughout the school day.
- Community Involvement: We collaborate with local organisations and agencies to enhance our PSHE provision. This includes career days and workshops, charity and fund raising events and projects that empower pupils to make a positive impact in society.
- Assessment and Tracking: We use ongoing formative assessment methods to monitor pupil understanding and progress within the Jigsaw curriculum. Feedback from pupils is regularly sought to inform and refine our approach, ensuring that our curriculum remains relevant and effective.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is evident through:
- Pupil Well-Being: Our pupils demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence, resilience, and confidence. They articulate their thoughts and feelings effectively and understand mental health and well-being, contributing to a positive school atmosphere. Children use happy breathing regularly to help with self regulation.
- Positive Relationships: There is a noticeable improvement in relationships between peers and staff, with pupils showing respect, empathy, and support for one another, resulting in a harmonious learning environment.
- Community Engagement: Pupils are actively engaged in their community, participating in wider school initiatives. They show a strong sense of civic responsibility and an understanding of the importance of contributing positively to society.
- Academically and Socially Prepared Learners: Our pupils leave Hawkesley well-prepared for the next stages of their education and adulthood; they possess the social skills necessary to navigate various situations and relationships in their future lives.
- External Recognition: Our My Happy Mind programme has gained recognition from the official My Happy Mind organisation and has been celebrated in whole school worship, demonstrating our commitment to outstanding practice in PSHE education.
In conclusion, our PSHE curriculum at Hawkesley is clearly outlined, comprehensive, and aligned with the latest Ofsted guidance. By utilising the Jigsaw PSHE programme, we ensure that our pupils thrive both in school and in their future lives ‘Letting their Light Shine’.
